All my DVD Movie Reviews are positive. That's because I only review movies I have enjoyed watching on DVD.
Bill (Michael Douglas) is mad as hell, fed-up, and is going home. Detective Pendergast (Robert Duvall) would like to retire from the LAPD today, but first he'd like to stop Bill from going home. But Bill guns down a few people along the path anyway. This 1993 thriller directed by Joel Schumacher, who has directed such diverse masterpieces from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to BATMAN FOREVER and even going back a few years to ST. ELMO'S FIRE in 1985, is a haunting character study of two opposites. The opening scenes reveal a variety of disturbing close up shots that build up to the desperation in Bill, showing his tension and new found propensity for violence. Pendergast though shows a calm attitude in his stalk for a man gone mad.
If you live in Los Angeles, you may recognize some of LA's less glamorous neighborhoods. If you don't reside there, you will probably appreciate the camera's perfect capture of the storyline area anyway. And I don't know about you, but anytime I get to see a Robert Duvall performance, I'm there. I suppose that Bill killing a few people with an automatic weapon and slapping a few in the head with a sawed-off baseball bat could be classified as violence. But as I mentioned, he's mad as hell. I therefor wouldn't recommend this film for the squeamish, but anyway, the dead guys are bad guys...and it is R rated. While the story is jam packed with rage and violence, I think you may chuckle here and there. Yes deep down there is some comedy albeit very dark.
As is always my intent, this is just a quick opinion of a film I've enjoyed. It isn't a storyline synopsis. Just a quick look at a lost film with an artful story and great characters. I just want to remind you that it's out there and if you missed it on the first go-around, catch it now.
